Tankless Water Heaters Reviewed

When it is time for a replacement of the old water heating tanks, homeowners should consider replacement with a high efficiency tankless water heaters.  These units are ideal for residential use where they provide an endless supply of hot water for showers, laundry and dishwashing.

There are several manufacturers of these units.  Some of the more notable include Bosch, Rheem and GE.  The systems may use either gas or electricity to provide the heat for the H20.  Gas systems are more efficient and able to provide a supply that can feed more than one tap at a time.  Many of the electric units are small and thus supply only one to two taps at a time.

The General Electric system provides a high quality tankless unit that heats using gas.  The unit only heats when a tap is turned on.  This larger unit is designed to provide for the needs of the entire home.  The largest unit provides up to 9.4 gallons per minute.  It can feed several taps at the same time, so it is possible for two separate showers to run at the same time.  In addition, the shower can be running along with the washing machine and dishwasher.  Ceramic heaters space through the unit protect it from freezing temperatures that could otherwise cause damage.  Units are available for use indoors as well as outdoors.  They may be fueled by natural gas or LP gas.

When looking to buy one of these systems, shoppers may have more difficulty finding them locally than the older style tank system.  Limited brands may be found at home improvement stores or in plumbing supply houses.  Many of the manufacturer's website will give information about where to purchase the systems locally if they are available.  Another option is to order online.  Expect to pay more for this system than for the tank type system.  In the USA, there is currently an energy tax rebate that may help to offset the cost of the system.

Families interested in using less energy for the heating of water in the home will find that tankless water heaters offer an excellent way to save money.  Natural or LP gas systems generally provide a larger supply, but makers are working to improve the output of electric systems.  Since the H20 is only heated when needed, there is no constant heating of a full tank only to let it cool for heating once again.
